Academy Rules

The members of the UPHA Chapter 6/7 would like to recommend the following list of rules to be used in the Academy Division at the horse shows in our Chapter which consist of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.

The Lesson Horse

  • Open only to horses or ponies used in a Lesson Program.
  • Horses may cross enter in performance classes at the same show.
  • Academy Performance classes shall be judged on the rider's horsemanship and the overall picture of the rider and horse.
  • Academy Equitation classes shall be judged on Basic Equitation skills.
  • English tack is to be used, unless otherwise specified. Full, snaffle or Pelham bridles may be used.

The Academy Rider

  • Open to students enrolled in a lesson program.
  • An Academy Rider may cross enter in another division, but not at the same show, with the exception of driving classes.
  • Headers are allowed in all Academy classes if needed for safety.
  • Once a rider has shown in a canter class--of any breed--they may not return to the Walk/Trot Division.
  • Age of entries are determined by the age as of December 1 of the previous year--USEF rules.
  • Braiding and hoof blacking is optional.
  • Acceptable Attire
    • Dark slacks or jods.
    • Boots or footwear with heels.
    • Collared shirt with vest or sweater.
    • Man's tie.
    • Derbies or other traditional headgear is optional.
    • No riding suits or day coats are allowed.
    • Neatness of attire and cleanliness of tack will be judged.

The Academy Maiden Division

  • For riders who have never won a blue ribbon in a Walk/Trot/Canter class.

The Academy Limit Division

  • For riders who have won less then six blue ribbons in Walk/Trot/Canter classes.
  • Maiden riders qualify for this division.

The Advanced Academy Division

  • For riders 17 and under, who have won six or more blue ribbons and have competed in the Academy Walk/Trot/Canter division for at least two years.
  • All blue ribbons won in the last two years (December 1, 2004 to December 1, 2006) in the Walk/Trot/Canter division--in any division--count toward which division you will show in.
  • Blue ribbons won in a one horse class do not count.
  • Any rider wishing to move up to the Advance Division may do so--but may not return to the Limit division.

The Beginner Walk and Trot Division

  • These classes need to be consulted with your local Lesson Program Instructors to determine the best age division to be used.

The Walk/Trot/Canter Division--Riders 17 and Under

  • Academy Maiden Performance
  • Academy Limit Performance
  • Academy Maiden/Limit Performance Championship
  • Academy Maiden Equitation
  • Academy Limit Equitation
  • Academy Maiden/Limit Equitation Championship
  • Academy Advanced Performance
  • Academy Advanced Performance Championship
  • Academy Advanced Equitation
  • Academy Advanced Equitation Championship

The Adult Academy Division

  • All Classes are Walk/Trot/Canter unless decided otherwise by the show management.
    • Adult Equitation
    • Adult Equitation Championship
    • Adult Performance
    • Adult Performance Championship

Please bear in mind that this list of rules and list of classes are being recommended to the horse shows and their management by the members of the UPHA Chapter 6/7. We can only suggest that the shows accept our recommendation. If a show chooses not to except these rules and classes, in full or partial, then the rules the show prints in their premium list will govern the Academy Division. We will certainly support your show no matter what you decide.
